Legal Advisor / Immigration Specialist​

Position Summary:
Unity to Serve International is seeking an experienced Legal Advisor / Immigration Specialist to provide expert legal guidance and immigration support for immigrants, refugees, and underserved populations. This role is essential in ensuring clients receive accurate, timely, and culturally sensitive legal assistance to navigate complex immigration laws and processes. The specialist will work closely with clients, community partners, and internal teams to uphold the organization’s mission of empowerment and inclusion.

Responsibilities:

• Provide legal advice and representation related to immigration matters such as asylum, family reunification, visas, work permits, DACA, TPS, naturalization, and deportation defense.
• Conduct client intake interviews, assess eligibility, and develop individualized legal case plans.
• Prepare and submit immigration applications, petitions, and supporting documentation.
• Monitor case progress, provide follow-up support, and keep clients informed of case status and deadlines.
• Educate clients on their legal rights and available services through workshops, presentations, and one-on-one counseling.
• Collaborate with external legal service providers, government agencies, and community organizations.
• Maintain confidential case files and records in compliance with agency and legal standards.
• Stay current on changes in immigration laws, policies, and procedures and advise staff accordingly.
• Assist with grant writing, reporting, and program development related to legal services.
• Participate in outreach and advocacy efforts to support immigrant rights and access to justice.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Officer or Executive Director.

Qualifications:

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree and admission to the bar, or relevant legal certification/licensure in immigration law.
• Minimum 3 years of experience providing immigration legal services, preferably within nonprofit or public interest settings.
• In-depth knowledge of U.S. immigration laws, regulations, and procedures.
• Experience with case management and client counseling.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with sensitivity to cultural and linguistic diversity.
• Ability to manage multiple cases and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and case management software.
• Multilingual skills a plus (especially Dari, Pashto, Spanish, Arabic, or Farsi).
• Commitment to serving underserved and vulnerable populations.

Location:
Based in California. Primarily in-person with some flexibility depending on program needs.
